Area Attractions

One of the beauties of The Retreat at Pipestem is the unique location of the property. While being very quiet and secluded, and located seemingly in the middle of a forest,  there are numerous active and not so active things one can participate in, only a short hike away.

Close by attractions

  • Hiking. The State Park has many beautiful trails, some starting at just a ten minute walk away from The Retreat. Even closer by, right behind the cabins a trail starts. This one, is not maintained, but is easy to recognize and follow.
  • Swimming. The Park offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
  • Kayaking. There is a lake about 20 walking minutes away, where one can rent canoes.

  • Fishing. At the same quiet lake, it is good and abundant fishing.
  • Horse back riding. In the Park, one can rent horses and follow beautiful horse trails along the lake and through the woods. Rides can be as short as 30 minutes, or as long as overnight ones.
  • Golf. There is an 18 holes championship golf course, only 15 walking minutes away.

  • Aerial Tram ride. An Aerial tram ride takes you down into the Bluestone River Gorge. Arriving there, one finds beautiful scenery, a restaurant and a gift shop.
  • Shopping. There are two very nice gift shops in the Park and many more in the area.
  • Dining. The park offers two restaurants, while Brandon’s restaurant is right at the entrance of the Park

  • Nature center. Visit this centre and get educated about the Flora and Fauna of the area.
  • Outdoor Amphitheatre. Sitting in a natural bowl, it provides a beautiful environment for weekend summer entertainment.
  • Archery. Available in the park

  • Lookout tower. Near the entrance of the Park.

          

 

Nearby attractions

  • Visit Tamarack, a shopping and dining experience, showcasing what West Virginia has to offer.
  • Spend an afternoon at an exhibition coal mine
  • Be awed by the New River Gorge national river. The second oldest river in the world and stand under the largest single arch steel bridge there is.

 

 

  • Wild water rafting. There are several commercial wild water rafting companies, offering various levels of rafting.
  • Walk around the historic towns of Bramwell and Hinton, and relive the old railroad days.
  • Antiquing

  • When the season is there, go skiing at Winter Place Ski area, about 35 to 40 minutes away.
  • Experience the world famous Greenbriar Resort in White Sulphur Springs
  • Historic Lewisburg

  • Sandstone falls
  • Bluestone lake with boats for rent.

    Fishing and Hunting

    Fishing

    The Retreat at Pipestem is within easy reach of multiple sites where you can fish. Bluestone Lake, the Bluestone river, The Upper New River and the Greenbrier River and numerous smaller streams in the area are ideal locations for Smallmouth Bass, Trout and Fly fishing. Guided float fishing tours and boat rentals are available in the area as well.

    Hunting

    There are several public and private hunting grounds around Pipestem. The biggest of course being Bluestone Lake. Species include, Deer, Turkey, Grouse and many more.
